How to read tire labels? Rolling resistance matters most

How to read tire labels? Rolling resistance matters most Studies show that most drivers do not pay attention to the EU tire label. Tire manufacturers say that those motorists who notice them place too much emphasis on rolling resistance. Meanwhile, grip is what matters, especially with winter tires.

For several years now, all new tires sold in the European Union have been required to carry special labels, similar to those placed on washing machines or refrigerators. They show rolling resistance, which affects fuel consumption, wet grip, which affects braking distances and the risk of skidding, as well as noise emitted by such tires while driving.

Half of the drivers do not pay attention to these inscriptions. But those who look at them - in the opinion of vulcanizers - too often consider rolling resistance to be the most important parameter. This is mistake.

Tire parameters are checked by manufacturers themselves before labeling. For example, wet grip is determined by measuring the braking distance from 80 to 20 km/h and measuring the friction force between road and tire at 65 km/h.
