For your accelerator pedal to actually work when you press it, it must be connected to the throttle body. Older cars had a mechanical link between the throttle body and the accelerator pedal. Electronic Throttle Controllers (ETCs) are becoming the main type of throttle controllers. Throttle controllers use a position sensor that is located on the gas pedal. Every time you press the accelerator, a message is sent to the control unit, which then controls the throttle.

This is the part you don't really think about. You simply press the accelerator pedal and wait for the appropriate throttle response. Unfortunately, if the throttle controller is faulty and fails, you don't have the luxury of just "pushing the pedal" and getting results. Now it's clear that the throttle controller usually has some built-in failover and backup features, but again, these can fail too. The throttle controller is not usually a part of regular maintenance and service. Instead, it's best to just watch for warning signs that it may be failing and nearing the end of its life.

Speaking of warning signs, let's take a look at some of the potential problems that a faulty controller can cause:

  • You can press the accelerator pedal and feel no reaction. This may indicate a problem with the throttle controller.

  • Maybe the accelerator pedal responds, but very slowly and sluggishly. Again, this could signal a problem with the throttle controller. If your car accelerates slowly, have it checked.

  • On the other hand, you may notice a sudden increase in speed without actually depressing the accelerator pedal.

The throttle controller is such an important component of your vehicle that if it starts to fail, it may not be safe to continue driving. Although it is designed to last the lifetime of your vehicle, as electrical faults can occur from time to time and require immediate attention. If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned symptoms and suspect that your throttle controller needs to be replaced, see a certified mechanic to replace your faulty throttle controller to fix any further problems with your vehicle.
