How long does a dehumidifier with AC receiver last?

The AC receiver dryer is a disposable component, much like a disposable air filter or oil filter. It serves to filter everything in the air conditioning system that does not condense. The oil in the refrigerant retains moisture and allows debris to remain in the system. In addition, when moisture combines with the refrigerant, hydrochloric acid is formed, which can cause serious damage to air conditioner components.

The desiccant receiver contains desiccant granules that absorb moisture. Once they have absorbed a large amount of moisture, they will no longer serve their purpose and the receiver drier will need to be replaced.

If you do not frequently use the air conditioner in the car, the receiver dryer will last a long time - about three years. At this point, the desiccant granules will deteriorate to the point where they will actually break down, clog the expansion valve, and possibly even damage the compressor. Signs that your AC receiver dryer needs to be replaced:

  • Significant temperature difference in the cabin
  • Unusual sounds during air conditioner operation

Every time your air conditioning system is serviced, the receiver drier needs to be replaced. Otherwise, you may face costly repairs. If you suspect that your AC receiver dryer has stopped working properly, you should have it checked. An experienced mechanic can analyze your AC system to identify any problems and replace the AC receiver dryer if necessary.
