How long does a CV axle/shaft assembly take?

Axles or CV (constant speed) shafts are long metal rods that connect your vehicle's wheels to the transmission gears and allow the wheels to turn. The transmission works to turn the axle shafts, which in turn makes the wheels turn. If the axle shaft is damaged, you simply will not go anywhere, because the wheels of your car will not rotate.

Axle/Gimbal assemblies don't really have an expiration date. In most cases, they will last the lifetime of your car. However, having said that, keep in mind that whenever your vehicle is in motion, your axle/shaft assembly is working. And, like all moving metal parts, the axle/CV joint can be subject to wear. It must be properly lubricated to prevent wear, and lubricant leakage is the most common cause of assembly failure and replacement. The axle shafts consist of the shaft itself, as well as CV joints and "cases", which are containers in which the axle lubricant is stored. If grease leaks out of the shoes, the pivots lose lubrication, dirt gets in, and the axle can wear out.

Signs that your axle/shaft assembly needs to be replaced include:

  • Grease around tires
  • Clicks when turning
  • Vibration while driving

Any problem with your CV axle/shaft assembly is a major safety concern. If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should contact a professional mechanic without delay and have the axle/CV joint replaced immediately.
