Almost every function of your car is controlled by a switch of some sort. When you start the car, the ignition cylinder activates the ignition switch. When you open your car's power windows, you operate a switch. When you activate the rear window defroster, you press a switch. A switch is a component that changes the electrical input of a device, whether it is on or off, increasing or decreasing.

No matter what function it performs, every button in your car is a switch. Their purpose is to turn a feature on or off, or to make a setting. Some switches, such as radio buttons and door lock switches, are used much more frequently than others.

Switches are prone to failure depending on how often they are used. A few switches especially prone to failure:

  • Driver Power Window Switch
  • Driver side electric door lock switch
  • Egnition lock
  • headlight switch

While these switches are more prone to wear than others, life expectancy has not been established. It is quite possible that a power door lock switch can be used several thousand times and never fail. The ignition lock can be turned on dozens of times a day for decades and never needs to be replaced. Although some of them require replacement more often, this does not mean that you should replace them on your car.

If you're having any problems with one of the switches in your car, whether it's the heater or the audio system, have an auto repair technician check and replace the defective switch.
