Your car's engine requires a significant number of sensors to function properly. Oxygen sensors, vehicle speed sensor, mass air flow sensor are just some of them. Your motor also needs a speed sync sensor (note that some motors have more than one speed sync sensor). You might be more familiar with this as a crankshaft sensor.

Essentially, the speed timing sensor is responsible for monitoring the teeth of the crankshaft as it rotates. The rotation of the crankshaft actually creates a magnetic field around the sensor (which is a magnetic coil). When the teeth pass through, they create tiny field fluctuations that are recorded by the sensor. This information is transmitted to the vehicle's computer, which uses the data to adjust parameters such as variable valve timing, the amount of fuel injected into each cylinder, and more.

Your vehicle's speed sensor is used whenever the engine is running. Because of this, it is subject to a lot of wear and tear. There are other issues that can affect its durability, including pollutants, debris, and the like. In addition, the wiring harness could be damaged, due to which the sensor could not transmit information to the car's computer.

The service life of the speed sensor / crankshaft sensor is not specified.

It is important to be aware of some of the most common speed sensor failure symptoms in order to be prepared for this. This includes:

  • Check Engine light on dashboard
  • Engine runs rough (misfire)
  • Loss of engine power
  • Engine may not start
