Fog lights are a wonderful thing and often underestimated. They can make driving in bad night conditions much easier and safer thanks to the wide, flat beam of light they emit. They are located at the bottom of the front bumper, allowing you to illuminate the rest of the road. Obviously, they are quite useful in foggy conditions, but they can also help in bright light, dusty roads, snow and rain. Once you start using them, you will quickly be hooked.

Fog lights work in a completely different way than your headlights. This means that you will be able to turn them on and off independently of each other so that they are not tied to the headlight system. What they have in common with your headlights is that they use light bulbs. Unfortunately, light bulbs won't last the lifetime of your car, which means that at some point, or maybe at different points, you'll have to replace them. There is no set mileage at which this will need to be done as it depends on how often you use them.

Here are a few signs that your fog lamp bulb has reached the end of its life:

  • You turn on the fog lights, but nothing happens. There are a lot of things going on, but the simple answer is that your bulbs have burned out.

  • Your vehicle may provide you with an alert that lets you know that your light bulb is not working. However, not all vehicles are equipped with this warning.

  • The fog light bulb is located in the fog light unit. They can be difficult to access, so you may prefer to have a replacement fitted by a professional mechanic. They may even come to your house to do it for you.

  • It's also wise to check your fog lights when replacing a bulb. It is recommended to change both bulbs at the same time.

Your bulb is in the fog lamp unit. These bulbs are not designed to last the lifetime of your vehicle, so you will need to replace them at some point. It's always a good idea to replace both at the same time. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms and suspect that your fog/high beam bulb needs replacing, have a diagnosis or have a fog/high beam replacement service from a certified mechanic.
