How long does the condenser fan relay last?

The condenser fan relay allows the cooling fan to push air through the radiator and the condenser to cool the vehicle. This part is connected to the condenser fan and is normally used when the car's A/C is on. Other parts of the condenser fan relay include the fan motor, control module, and temperature sensor. Together they make up a circuit that allows you to cool the car.

The condenser fan relay is the part of the circuit most likely to fail. The relay coil should show a resistance of 40 to 80 ohms. If there is high resistance, the coil fails, although it may still work, or it may not work under high electrical loads. If there is no resistance across the coil, it has completely failed and the condenser fan relay should be replaced by a professional mechanic.

Over time, the condenser fan relay may also break. The easiest way to find out if the relay in your car is broken is to shake it. If a rattling sound is heard inside, most likely the relay armature is broken and needs to be replaced.

If you don't feel air circulating when you turn on the A/C, the condenser fan relay is probably bad. If you continue to use the air conditioner with a bad relay, the engine may overheat. This may require more serious repairs than if you just looked at the condenser fan relay.

Because the condenser fan relay can fail or fail over time, you should be aware of the symptoms that indicate it needs to be replaced.

Signs that the condenser fan relay needs to be replaced include:

  • The engine gets very hot
  • The air conditioner does not work all the time
  • The air conditioner doesn't work at all
  • Air conditioner does not blow cold air when turned on
  • You hear a rattling sound when you pump the condenser fan relay.

Do not leave the condenser fan relay unattended as this can cause more serious problems and may be hazardous to health during warmer months. Consult a mechanic if you experience any of the above problems. They will diagnose your vehicle and make the necessary repairs.
