How long does the cooling fan relay last?

The cooling fan relay is designed to supply air through the air conditioner condenser and radiator. Most cars have two fans, one for the radiator and one for the condenser. After turning on the air conditioner, both fans should turn on. The fan turns on when the power control module (PCM) receives a signal that the engine temperature requires additional airflow to cool it.

The PCM sends a signal to the cooling fan relay to energize the cooling fan. The fan relay provides power through the switch and supplies 12 volts to the cooling fan which starts the job. After the engine reaches a certain temperature, the cooling fan is switched off.

If the cooling fan relay fails, it may continue to operate even when the ignition is turned off or the engine is cold. On the other hand, the fan may not work at all, causing the motor to overheat or the gauge temperature to rise. If you notice that your air conditioner is not working properly or your car is constantly overheating, it may be time to replace the cooling fan relay.

The cooling fan circuit usually consists of a relay, a fan motor, and a control module. The cooling fan relay is the most likely to fail, so if you suspect it is failing, it should be checked by a professional. The mechanic will make sure he has the right amount of power and ground by checking the circuit. If the coil resistance is high, it means the relay is bad. If there is no resistance across the coil, the cooling fan relay has completely failed.

Since they can fail over time, you should be aware of the symptoms that indicate the need to replace the cooling fan relay.

Signs that indicate the need to replace the cooling fan relay include:

  • The cooling fan continues to run even when the vehicle is turned off
  • The air conditioner does not work properly, or does not cool, or does not work at all
  • The car is constantly overheating or the temperature gauge is above normal

If you notice any of the above problems, you may have a problem with the cooling fan relay. If you would like to have this problem checked out, have a certified mechanic inspect your vehicle and make repairs if necessary.
