Like other electronic systems in your car, your headlights have a fuse that keeps them working and also protects against power surges. A fuse is actually nothing more than a jumper - it's a small piece of metal that connects two legs. When too much voltage is passed through the fuse, the jumper breaks, opening the circuit. The bad news is that your headlights won't work until you replace the fuse.

New fuses have a very long service life. Theoretically, they can last indefinitely. The only things that can cause a fuse to blow are:

  • Short circuitA: If a short circuit occurs in the headlight circuit, the fuse will blow. The replaceable fuse will also burn out, most likely immediately.

  • VoltageA: If your headlight circuit is too high voltage, the fuse will blow.

  • Corrosion: Moisture may sometimes get into the fuse box. When this happens, it can cause corrosion. However, if this is the case, you will likely have more than one blown fuse. Please note that it is very rare for moisture to enter the cabin fuse box.

Problems in the electrical system can cause fuses to blow regularly - a short to the ground wire on one bulb is enough and the fuse can blow. Realize that if the fuse blows, none of the headlights will work. If one bulb works and the other doesn't, the fuse isn't the problem.

The fuses should last for years. If you're having trouble blowing fuses on your car's bulbs frequently, there's definitely an electrical issue and you should have it checked and diagnosed by a professional mechanic right away.
