Your engine needs fuel and air to run. However, these two things alone will not make it work. We need a way to ignite the fuel after mixing it with the intake air. This is what your car's spark plugs do. They create an electrical spark (as the name suggests) that ignites the air/fuel mixture and starts the engine.

Spark plugs have come a long way since they were a few decades ago. You will find many different types of tips on the market, from double and quadrilateral to iridium and many more. The main reason for the need to replace spark plugs is their wear. When the spark plug ignites, a small amount of the electrode evaporates. After all, this is too little to create the spark needed to ignite the air/fuel mixture. The result is engine roughness, misfiring and other problems that reduce performance and save fuel.

In terms of life, the life you enjoy will depend on the type of spark plug used in the engine. Ordinary copper plugs only last about 20,000 to 60,000 miles. However, using platinum spark plugs can give you 100,000 miles. Other types can last up to XNUMX, XNUMX miles.

Of course, it can be very difficult to tell if your spark plugs are starting to wear out. They're installed in the engine, so it's not as easy to check for wear as it is with other things, like tires. However, there are a few key signs that indicate that your engine's spark plugs are nearing the end of their life. This includes:

  • Rough idle (which can also be a sign of many other problems, but worn spark plugs should be eliminated as the cause)

  • Poor fuel economy (another symptom of many problems, but spark plugs are a common cause)

  • Engine misfire

  • Lack of power during acceleration

  • Engine surge (caused by too much air in the air/fuel mixture, often due to worn spark plugs)

If you suspect that your car needs new spark plugs, AvtoTachki can help. One of our field mechanics can come to your home or office to inspect the forks and replace them if necessary. They can also inspect other components of the ignition system including spark plug wires, coil packs and more to ensure you can get back on the road quickly and safely.
