How long does a PCV filter last?

The forced crankcase ventilation, also known as a PCV valve, helps relieve some of the excess pressure built up in your car's crankcase. Using the filtered air flow, the PCV system sucks vapors and gases from the crankcase and redirects them through the intake manifold, burning them in the engine's combustion chambers.

A side effect of this is creating a vacuum, which in turn helps reduce oil leaks, thus reducing engine oil loss and allowing the oil to better lubricate and protect your vehicle's engine. To find the PCV filter, locate the intake manifold. The PCV valve connects the crankcase and intake manifold. Check your vehicle owner's manual for the exact location of the PCV valve in your vehicle make and model.

When should I change the PCV filter in my car?

Most manufacturers recommend that vehicle owners replace the PCV filter at least every 60,000 miles. While not a hard and fast rule, a mechanic should check the performance of a PVC system every two years to make sure it is working properly.

A mechanic can check the performance of the PVC system by noting the change in your vehicle's idle speed by limiting the oxygen supply to the PVC valve. Talk to a mechanic to determine the best PVC filter when looking for a replacement for your vehicle.

Signs of a bad PVC filter

The PVC filter helps keep the engine running properly by helping to move fumes and sludge-forming fumes from the engine crankcase to the engine's combustion chambers for easy disposal. The following signs will tell you when you need to replace the PVC filter in your car:

  • The breather element is dirty. The breather element helps filter the air drawn into your vehicle's crankcase by the PCV system. The breather element made of paper or foam is located inside the air filter housing.

  • Increased oil consumption is another sign that the PCV valve may have failed. Decreased engine performance, such as engine stalling, is also a sign of a bad PVC valve.
