Your car's alternator is what supplies power to your car's battery. It works by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, taking power from the engine's crankshaft and transferring it to a battery where it is stored. The generator is connected to the crankshaft using a belt - either a V-belt or a V-ribbed belt. Only the alternator is driven by a V-belt. If your vehicle is equipped with a V-ribbed belt, then other components also receive power. If the alternator belt breaks, the car battery is not receiving a charge, and accessories may not work properly, if at all.

The alternator belt runs constantly, from the moment the car is started to the moment it is turned off. Like all other car belts, it is made of rubber, which means it can wear out over time. You can usually expect your alternator belt to last 3-4 years. You should check it regularly - a good rule of thumb is to have your mechanic check the alternator belt every time you change the oil.

Signs that the alternator belt needs replacing are:

  • Abrasion, cracking or friability
  • Headlights and/or interior lighting flicker or dim
  • Engine won't turn over
  • Car kiosks
  • Accessories don't work

If you notice signs of alternator belt wear or experience any of the above symptoms, you should have a qualified mechanic have the belt checked. Have a mechanic replace the failed alternator belt to fix further problems with your vehicle.
