How long does an air pump belt last?

Most new cars are equipped with two air injection systems. The primary system feeds air through an air filter and then to the intake, where it mixes with fuel to create combustion. The secondary system uses a pump that directs air into the exhaust system, where it is taken back and re-burned to provide better gas mileage and reduce pollution. The air pump of the secondary system could be driven electrically or with a belt. Belt drive systems are actually becoming less common, but your vehicle may still be equipped with one. It could be a dedicated belt, or the system could be driven by a serpentine belt that sends power to all of your engine's accessories.

The belt essentially takes power from your engine's crankshaft and transfers it to the pump. If the belt breaks, then the secondary injection system will stop working and your air pump will stop working. If it is driven by a V-ribbed belt, of course, everything stops.

The air pump belt is used every time you ride. This means that it is widely used and subject to wear and tear. However, even if you don't drive much, belts are subject to wear simply due to aging. You can get a belt life of up to eight years, but it's more likely to have to be replaced within three to four years. After at least three years, your air pump belt should be checked for signs that it may need to be replaced. These signs include:

  • Rastreskivanie
  • Stretching
  • Missing edges

If you think your air pump belt is nearing the end of its life, you should have it checked. A professional mechanic can inspect all of your car belts and replace the air pump belt and any that show signs of damage.
