How long does an air bleed housing assembly last?

The air outlet housing assembly is located near the rear of your vehicle's engine. It is part of the cooling system and consists of a small housing to which an exhaust valve is attached. It only comes into play after a coolant change - it allows air to escape from the system and prevents the engine from overheating. Coolant is certainly vital to the performance of your vehicle, and not just during the summer months. In winter, if you simply pour water into your car's cooling system, it can expand and freeze, causing severe engine damage. If there is air in the lines, regardless of the time of year, the engine can overheat and again serious damage can occur.

Air bleed housing assembly does not always work. As we said, it only does its job when the coolant is replaced. However, it is always present in your car, which means that, like many other car parts, it is prone to corrosion - even more so than parts that are used constantly. Once it rusts, it will stop working. You can generally expect your housing air outlet assembly to last about five years before it needs to be replaced.

Signs that the air vent housing assembly needs to be replaced include:

  • Leakage of coolant from the housing
  • Drain valve does not open

A damaged air vent housing will not affect the performance of your vehicle until you change the coolant. You should check the housing each time you bring your vehicle in for a coolant change and if it is damaged, have an experienced mechanic replace your air outlet assembly.
