Your car engine needs coolant to run safely. Automotive engines generate a significant amount of heat during operation, and this heat must be removed and limited to a certain temperature range. If overheating is allowed, the engine can be seriously damaged (up to a crack in the head).

Coolant flows from the radiator, passes through and around the engine, and then returns to the radiator again. In the radiator, the coolant releases its heat to the atmosphere and then begins its journey through the engine again. It enters and leaves the radiator through two hoses - the upper and lower radiator pipes.

Radiator hoses are exposed to very high temperatures, both from the coolant flowing through them and from the engine. They are also subjected to very high pressure. Although they are made to be very strong, they eventually fail. This is normal and they are considered regular maintenance items. In fact, it's highly recommended that you check your radiator hoses at every oil change to make sure you can replace them before they fail. If a hose fails while driving, serious engine damage can result (loss of coolant can very easily cause the engine to overheat).

There is no exact service life for a radiator hose. They should last at least five years, but some will last longer, especially if you keep a close eye on coolant changes and proper maintenance of your vehicle.

Given the importance of having good radiator hoses, it makes sense to be aware of a few signs that could indicate one is about to fail. This includes:

  • Cracks or cracks in the hose
  • Blisters in the hose
  • "Crunching" sensation when squeezing the hose (do not test while hot)
  • Bulging or damaged ends (where the hose connects to the radiator)
  • Coolant leaks

If you suspect one of your radiator hoses is about to fail, don't wait. A certified mechanic can inspect the radiator, radiator hoses, and other cooling system components and make any necessary repairs.
