How long does the accelerator cable last?

The accelerator cable in your car is what allows you, as the driver, to control the speed of your car by depressing or releasing the accelerator pedal. The cable itself is made of metal wire and encased in rubber and metal. Since you use the accelerator every time you ride, even during the shortest trip, the cable is exposed to a lot of wear. Constant friction can cause wear and if it wears too much it can break. Obviously, when this happens, the result is never good - you can stop in heavy traffic, when going up a hill, or in any other adverse conditions.

How long you can expect your accelerator cable to last depends largely on how often you drive. The more often the accelerator cable is used, the more it is subject to wear. You can usually expect the accelerator cable to be replaced within five years.

Usually the accelerator cable just doesn't "release". You will notice one or more of the following signs:

  • Vehicle jerks when using cruise control
  • No engine response to pressing the accelerator pedal
  • The engine does not respond unless the accelerator pedal is pressed hard.

Accelerator cables are generally quite durable, but if you suspect your cable has failed, you should have it checked by a qualified mechanic. A professional mechanic can inspect and replace the accelerator cable if necessary.
