How long does an AC air filter last?

The air conditioner air filter in your car (also known as a cabin filter) provides clean, cool air for you and your passengers. Usually made of cotton or paper, it is located under the hood or behind the glove compartment and prevents pollen, smog, dust and mold from entering the cabin. It can even catch debris such as rodent droppings. Most people hardly ever think about their air conditioner air filter—if they even know it exists—until there is a problem. Fortunately, this rarely happens unless you use the air conditioner every day or drive frequently in places where dust and other debris are common.

You can generally expect your AC filter to last at least 60,000 miles. If it is clogged and needs to be replaced, this should not be neglected. This is because your car's engine is supplying power to the AC components and if the filter is clogged, the system will demand more power from the engine and take power from other components such as the alternator and transmission.

Signs that your air conditioner air filter needs to be replaced include:

  • Reduced power
  • Not enough cold air entering the passenger compartment
  • Bad smell due to dust and other contaminants

If you notice any of these symptoms, your air conditioner air filter may need to be replaced. You can call a certified mechanic to diagnose air conditioning problems and replace the air conditioning filter if necessary so you and your passengers can enjoy cool, clean air.
