There is no shortage of electrical components in your car today. In fact, a lot of it seems to work with buttons and switches, and it's only natural that you run into problems from time to time. The door lock switch is a small but important component of your automatic door locking and unlocking system. If your car is equipped with power door locks, then it has this part. It's literally a switch you'll find on the driver's side door and other doors that allows you to lock and unlock the door with the press of a button.

To get really technical information, the door lock switch is an electric rocker switch. Just push it up or down to use it. Each time you do this, a signal is sent to the door lock relay to open the door lock actuator. Now, as far as the lifespan of this part is concerned, it is unfortunately subject to wear and tear. It's not a part you use occasionally, it's used almost every time you use your car. Every time you use it, you are sending electrical current through the switch, and over time, the switch will simply stop working. Although this may not happen on a regular basis, there is a good chance that if you have been using the car for a while (several years or longer), you may be faced with the replacement of this part.

Here are some signals that will alert you when it's time to replace a part.

  • You press the door lock switch to open the lock and it doesn't work.
  • You press the door lock button to lock the door and it doesn't work.

There is good news with this job replacement. First, it's very affordable as you don't have to spend a lot of money to replace a part. Secondly, this is a relatively simple solution for a mechanic, so it won't take long. And thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, if this part stops working, then this is inconvenient, but does not pose a threat to driving safety. This means that you can fix it at your convenience.

If you experience any of these symptoms and suspect that the door lock switch needs replacing, have a diagnosis or have a door lock replacement service from a professional mechanic.
