How to get rid of the smell of smoke in the car

There are a number of unpleasant odors that the interior of a car can carry throughout the entire time it is on the road. Among these are particularly unpleasant odors resulting from long-term exposure to one particular source: cigarette smoking.

Fortunately, if the car has been exposed to smoke, there are a number of methods to remove the smell from the upholstery and interior surfaces of the car. Before cleaning your vehicle, first assess the situation. Here's how to get rid of the smell of tobacco in the car.

How to get smoke smell out of a car

  1. Gather the right materials - Before you get started, first collect the following materials: baking soda, bowl, charcoal air purifier, fabric air freshener such as Febreze, hanging air freshener, spray bottle, vacuum cleaner or store vacuum cleaner, vinegar, water.

  2. Get rid of cigarette remnants and car ash - Empty the ashtray and clean it thoroughly. Leave it outside the car after cleaning so it can be cleaned again if it still smells of tobacco after airing out.

  3. Vacuum the whole car - Make sure you get into small spaces like between seats and between cushions. Remove the floor mats and vacuum the carpet underneath. As with the ashtray, leave the floor mats on the outside of the vehicle while cleaning to allow them to air out.

  4. Removing odor from soft surfaces “Now it's time to deal with the parts of the car most exposed to tobacco smoke: soft surfaces. These softer surfaces, such as seats, carpets and headlining, absorb the smell of tobacco smoke very quickly.

Functions: They must be cleaned with some material that can remove odor from the fabric. This can also be done in several ways, depending on the preference of the driver.

  5. Sprinkle with baking soda Take a box and sprinkle it on literally every soft surface in your car. Sit on the seats and in the space between the seats.

  6. Rub baking soda on the ceiling Take a handful of baking soda and lightly rub it into the headlining so that it is visible on it. After it sits for 12 to 36 hours, vacuum it all up.

  7. Empty the vacuum cleaner and repeat - You must remove all the baking soda from the vacuum bag and vacuum again. The fine powder penetrates deep into the fabric of the seats.

  8. Clear ventilation - To freshen up the ventilation system, first check the air filter that supplies air to the car. If it is dirty, then replacing it will noticeably improve air quality.

  9. Recirculated air - While all doors are open, turn the ventilation to "recirculate" and allow air to pass through the entire system for an hour or so.

Functions: Adding air freshener to the car before doing this may lead to more noticeable results.

  10. Clean hard surfaces — Hard surfaces inside the vehicle need to be cleaned. Make sure the cleaners you use are approved for use on surfaces inside the vehicle. Glass cleaner should be used on the inside of windows and mirrors. Other cleaners, either general purpose or single surface cleaners, should be used on all available hard surfaces.

Warnings for Chemical Cleaners: Some plastics and woods may react poorly to certain chemicals. When in doubt, test the cleaner in one small spot that isn't too noticeable.

Functions: If the rider is looking for a more natural solution, vinegar and water can be sprayed on the surface with a spray bottle. Wipe surfaces thoroughly.

  11. Recover deleted items - When everything is clean and beautiful, you can put the floor mats back in the car, and return the ashtray home. If there is a smell in the car, then there are still some solutions.

The smell of tobacco is not a life sentence - with a thorough and effective cleaning, any car can smell as good or even better than the day it left the factory. If you need help servicing your vehicle, hire a certified field technician from AvtoTachki today.
