Oxygen sensors help your vehicle control both the fuel system and the ignition system, making them an essential component to ensure your vehicle starts smoothly. Improve fuel efficiency and improve emissions with a properly functioning oxygen sensor. Every time you change the catalytic converter, you should also consider replacing the oxygen sensor - or roughly every 60,000 miles.

Pre-1980 vehicles do not have oxygen sensors; a component that measures the ratio of air and fuel and transmits this data to the vehicle's on-board computer. Your gas bills can skyrocket if you don't have an accurately working oxygen sensor.

Malfunctions are common when the wrong oxygen sensor is installed in the wrong place. Your vehicle can have up to four oxygen sensors, so make sure you install the correct sensor in the correct location. The variety of sensor codes and locations can be a bit confusing if you're not familiar with the layout.

Attention: there are many naming conventions for sensor banks; buying OEM parts can help avoid confusion about this part.

The most common locations for oxygen sensors include:

  • The number of cylinders 1 is located next to the cylinder 1 of the engine; bank 2 is opposite bank 1. Four-cylinder engines only have 1 bank, while larger engines may have more.

  • Sensor 1 is located inside the sensor group and is located directly before the catalytic converter.

  • Sensor 2 - lower sensor; you can find this sensor inside the sensor block - it drops after the catalytic converter.

While the location of the sensor is very important, finding the right type of sensor should be very easy.
