A faulty air mass meter can cause a variety of problems such as harsh acceleration and idling, engine stalling and hesitation. This can be difficult to diagnose as a number of parts failing may reflect these symptoms. The same symptoms can be caused by any number of different parts: faulty wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor, pumps and injectors or timing.

The mass air flow sensor or flow meter measures the amount (mass) of air entering the engine and then transmits this information to the ECU or engine control unit. This ready flow of information allows the ECU to mix the right amount of fuel with the air flow to create efficient combustion. Faulty mass air flow sensors send inaccurate readings to the engine control unit, causing it to mix the wrong amount of air with the fuel, discarding the whole ratio. To better understand the mass air flow sensor, here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Faulty MAF sensors will only get worse over time. Typically, a one-time failure means the end of that particular part.

  • The Check Engine light may come on when the mass air flow sensor begins to fail.

  • Running lean or rich can be a good indicator that it's time to replace the MAF sensor.

When you're ready to purchase a new mass air flow sensor, consider the following:

  • Make sure your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is compatible with your specific vehicle.

  • There are several different types of mass air flow sensors, including an outdoor version. Since this determines how your fuel mixture works, make sure you get the right version for your driving needs.

  • OEM parts are best suited for this particular component; Of course, do not choose a remanufactured part that is not covered by the warranty.

  • Poor quality components can compromise your car's performance, resulting in rough idle, engine stall, and general poor engine performance.

Don't be fooled by an inexpensive mass air flow sensor. Make sure you get a component that will last you for years to come and give you years of trouble-free ownership of your vehicle.
