Does the term "throttle position sensor" sound new to you? If yes, then consider yourself one of the many who have never heard of this car part. Obviously, this is the part of the throttle that makes your car move, but what exactly is this sensor responsible for?

The Throttle Position Sensor, or TPS, essentially monitors your vehicle's actual throttle position. The collected information is then sent to your car's computer. The TPS is located in the spindle/butterfly shaft. If your car is new, it is most likely a proximity sensor. What happens is when we step on the gas pedal, this throttle valve opens to allow air into the intake manifold.

There are signs to look out for that may indicate that your throttle position sensor is faulty or has failed. These signs include:

  • No fuel economy or engine performance information is sent to your vehicle's computer.

  • The Check Engine light comes on

  • Your car feels like it's jerking when you accelerate

  • Sudden increase in speed while driving

  • Your vehicle is idling or suddenly stalls

There are also secondary symptoms that include poor fuel efficiency and problems when trying to shift gears. It should be noted that new throttle position sensors do not wear out as quickly as they are non-contact. You don't even have to pay a premium price for this benefit.

There is no need to buy the most expensive part as these sensors tend to be pretty stable across the board. However, it is better to look for a new throttle position sensor than to buy a used one. Used can fail at any time. It is best to get advice from AvtoTachki which one is best for your car.
