Modern cars are wonderful: they offer so many extra features to help you stay safe on the road. The speedometer sensor is one of those great inventions made to help you maintain a safe speed and not speed up more than you expected while you dream (you know it happens!) there are cops everywhere.

Your speedometer sensor is located behind the transmission output shaft - it monitors the rotation of the wheels and crankshaft to control the speed of your vehicle. It supports the cruise control mechanism by sending it a pulse rate that tells the cruise control whether to speed you up or slow you down. It is also important to maintain ABS (anti-lock braking system) because it keeps the wheels spinning at the same speed. A damaged speed sensor can make driving dangerous because you can go much faster than you think and pick up dangerous speeds quickly.

A few things to remember about speed sensors:

  • Location typeA: There are two main types of speedometer sensors: engine speed sensors and wheel speed sensors. Both do essentially the same job in that they calculate your overall speed and relay that information to other parts of the car as well as to the driver via the speedometer, but the type of sensor you need to replace depends on the problem you're having. re-find a car with you.

  • Optical vs. magnetA: There are two main types of sensors: optical speed sensor and permanent magnet.

    • Optic: Conventional speed sensors use an optical VSS consisting of a photocell, a two-blade reflector and an LED. The reflector generates an electrical signal that is used to control the speed. Although the optical speed sensor is widely used, due to the large number of moving parts, it is much more likely to fail than a permanent magnet.
    • MagnetA: Permanent magnet sensors can provide much more accurate direction, speed, and position information, and the fact that they don't have many moving parts also prolongs their life.
  • Aftermarket vs. OEMA: Aftermarket sensors will probably be of roughly the same standards as OEM parts for these sensors, just make sure you get the highest quality sensors you can afford for longer life.

AttentionA: The size of your tires may affect the accuracy of your sensor, so re-calibrate if your tire size has changed.
