How to buy a good quality clutch master cylinder

The master cylinder in a manual transmission functions similarly to a brake master cylinder, and in fact both systems use brake fluid to lubricate internal components and provide the pressure needed to operate other parts of the mechanism.

The clutch master cylinder contains a "clutch fluid" reservoir, which actually only contains brake fluid. When the clutch is depressed, the pistons exert pressure on the fluid, which is then sent to the slave cylinder, and this pressure, in turn, allows you to engage the clutch and change gears. When that cylinder fails, whether it's due to wear, clogging, or a leak somewhere in the seal, the transmission will fail and your safety will be compromised.

When a cylinder fails, several different things can happen. You may experience a spongy clutch sensation, or the pedal may drop to the floor. The clutch can also suddenly engage while driving, causing the vehicle to jerk forward, which can easily lead to an accident. The cylinder should be replaced as soon as damage is found.

When buying a new cylinder, you want a good balance of durability and price. Since it is a vital part of your driving safety, it is well worth the extra investment.

How to make sure you buy a good quality clutch master cylinder

  • Look for cast steel, not extruded aluminum. Cast parts are generally stronger and more reliable.

  • Choose a reliable brand for your clutch master cylinder. Now is not the time to risk an unknown source.

  • Look for a guarantee. Some brands, as well as some dealers, offer warranties—even lifetime ones—on clutch master cylinders. Calculate the price-to-warranty ratio to get the right balance for your budget.
