How to buy a good quality GPS

Even if you have a smartphone, there are still reasons to invest in a standalone global positioning system (GPS) navigator for your car. Once a destination is entered, very simple turn-by-turn navigation lets you see your route progress as you drive, keeping you safe on the right track without taking your eyes off the road (a lot). Some GPS devices are built for specific purposes, such as for cyclists to help them avoid high-traffic areas such as highways, or for pedestrians to ignore one-way traffic restrictions. Some GPS navigation devices even offer the most economical route.

Before you buy a GPS navigator, think about your typical use. Will you be using it primarily for walking or cycling, or do you want something that will work for road transport as well? Is this what you will use every day? These questions will help you determine which GPS device is best for your specific use case.

There are a number of different features to consider when choosing a portable GPS device:

  • Mounting type: Two standard mounting methods include a rubber backing or a dashboard mount that can hold it in place exactly where you need it.

  • State laws: Check your state's restrictions on dashboard mounts; in some states you won't be allowed to add GPS to this location as it can be distracting.

  • Battery: Do you want a battery? Some systems can plug directly into your car's 12-volt outlet, while others offer built-in batteries so you can take them on the go, as well as an AC adapter to recharge at home.

  • Size: There are several different sizes available, so check the size of the device before ordering or buying it. You'll want to get one that's easy to pack into your bag if you want to travel with it.

  • A typeA: You can purchase handheld or in-dash GPS units, as well as some factory-installed GPS units. Understand that each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages, as well as different price categories. The most economical will be autonomous portable installations.

  • Using your phone: GPS-enabled smartphones may be the best option as you will almost always have your phone with you and this negates the need for an additional electronic tracking device.

No matter what type of GPS device you are considering, they will all help you get from point A to point B with minimal effort.
