How to buy high quality wheel chocks

Wheel chocks provide the necessary safety in any situation where the vehicle could roll over. For example, if you are changing a flat tire, you should place a tire chock directly diagonally across from the flat tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward or backward. They can also be important for towing trailers.

A quality wheel chock will have the right combination of material type, weight and size. To a lesser extent, patterns or texturing may also come into play. Keep the following in mind regarding wheel chocks:

  • Right stuff: Shock absorbers are available in urethane, rubber, aluminum and other materials. Each offers something different, from light portability to heavier weights for better tire grip.

  • The weightA: One of the most important considerations here is weight. A lightweight wheel chock may be suitable for a compact car and gentle slopes, but it will not be suitable for a full-size SUV on a steeper slope. The weight of the wheel chock helps prevent it from being kicked off by the vehicle.

  • Number of pads: check the number of wheel chocks sold in the package. Most should come in sets of two (usually you want to put pads on two tires). However, some of them are sold by the piece.

  • Design repositories: Some pads are designed so that they can be nested (called nesting) for easy storage. Others cannot be nested.

  • Vehicle weight: Make sure you purchase a set of wheel chocks that is rated for the weight of your vehicle. Heavier vehicles will require stronger, heavier and more expensive pads (nominal weight should be listed on packaging).

Wheel chocks provide important safety by preventing the vehicle from rolling.
