How to buy a quality air pump

Whether you call it an air pump or a smoke collection pump, it basically boils down to the same thing - a pump designed to force air into an engine to reduce emissions by re-burning exhaust vapors. Most modern air pumps are electronic, but older ones were belt driven. Both types are subject to wear and tear and you will have to replace yours when it eventually stops working.

There are several factors to consider when considering replacing an air pump, including whether you prefer a new model or a remanufactured one, the size of your engine, and the make/model you drive.

  • New or RefurbishedA: The first thing to consider is whether you want a new air pump or a remanufactured one. New pumps cost more than remanufactured pumps, and many remanufactured models come with a warranty that rivals that of new ones. Depending on the age of your vehicle, refurbished may be the only option available.

If you do go down the rebuild route, make sure the air pump comes with an OEM connector (for electric pumps) and that it has been tested for proper pump blade fit. Some other things to keep in mind include:

  • Make and model: Smog pumps are not available in universal configuration. You will need to buy one that is specifically designed for your make and model.

  • Engine size: Some automakers offer different engine sizes for the same make and model. This will have some influence on the choice of air pump. Make sure it fits your specific engine.

  • Transfer typeA: Automatic transmission vehicles use a different type of air pump than manual transmission vehicles, so make sure you buy one that fits your type of transmission.
