How to buy a quality truck tool box

If you have a pickup truck, the bed offers the means to carry a wide range of cargo. However, you can also turn it into a portable tool shed with the right truck tool box. There are quite a few different options on the market, and they are far from the same.

When choosing a tool box for a truck, you need to consider size and depth (relative to your truck body), as well as capacity, box/storage options, and construction material.

Keep the following in mind when looking for a toolbox:

  • SizeA: We'll start with the most important first. You will need to measure the width of your truck bed to make sure you are getting the right tool box. The depth (from cab to tailgate) must also be taken into account. A deep tool box can take up too much space in a short bed truck.

  • Construction materialA: You have two choices of material - metal or plastic. Plastic tool boxes tend to be cheaper and are quite durable. They are relatively strong and light. Metal is the best choice in terms of strength and durability, but it costs more.

  • Storage: You should keep your tools organized in the truck's toolbox. Look for a toolbox that offers both a large interior storage compartment and drawers that can be used for small items. This ensures that you can carry what you want and find it when you need it.

  • Strength: Most truck-mounted toolboxes offer at least some weather resistance, but it's worth looking into this more closely. Is the toolbox waterproof or just waterproof? What kind of seal is used (rubber or cloth/tape)?

  • Locking: You definitely need to make sure that the tool box has a strong lock (with a key) that will protect your valuable tools from thieves.

The right truck tool box gives you the ability to carry your tools with you wherever you go.
