How to buy a good quality ABS control module

The ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) Control Module, which is also known as EBM (Electronic Brake Module) or EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module), works almost like an engine control computer. This microprocessor receives information from sensors to prevent wheel lockup and therefore skidding by adjusting the hydraulic brake pressure.

The ABS module may be integrated into other components of the electronic system, such as the suspension computer, or may be a separate part. On newer systems, it may be located on the hydraulic modulator. On some vehicles, it may be located under the hood, in the trunk or in the passenger compartment.

The brake pedal switch and wheel speed sensors tell the module to go into active mode, adjusting the brake pressure as needed. Some ABS systems have a pump and a relay. While replacing this part can be fairly simple, it's an expensive fix - the part alone costs anywhere from just under $200 to over $500.

Ways to damage the ABS control module:

  • Impacts (from accidents or other incidents)
  • electrical overload
  • extreme temperatures

Symptoms of a bad ABS control module include ABS warning light on, speedometer malfunction, traction control disabling, and abnormal braking behavior. To find the right replacement part for your vehicle, you can refer to the manufacturer's website or user manual. Most automotive parts websites offer a simple interface that allows you to enter the year, make and model of your car to find the right part.

How to make sure you get a good quality ABS control module:

  • Don't save. Auto parts, especially the aftermarket, is one area where the adage “You get what you pay for” is mostly true. Aftermarket parts may be cheaper, but they may actually be equal to or better than OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. Just make sure the part meets or exceeds the OEM specifications.

  • Take a close look at changes. ABS control modules are an expensive part that can be repaired, just be sure to research the company's reputation and check the new part for defects or signs of wear.

  • Consult AutoTachki. Professionals are well aware of which parts are durable and which are not, and which brands can be better than others.

Keep in mind that if your car has an ABS control module mounted on a hydraulic modulator, you can't just replace a single part - the whole thing has to be replaced.
