How to buy a personal license plate in New Hampshire

Part 1 of 3: Choose a license plate message

Step 1. Go to the New Hampshire license plate page.. Visit the New Hampshire Automotive Department license plate page.

Step 2: Choose a special license plate design. Click on the link called "Number Lookup".

Select your vehicle type, then select your license plate design.

  • Functions: If you want to see what each license plate design looks like, click on the "License Plate Types" link on the license plate page.

Step 3. Choose a personalized message on your license plate.. In the "Enter license plate request" field, enter your preferred message.

You can use all letters and numbers, as well as the minus (-), plus (+), and ampersand (&) signs. Spaces cannot be used, and the letter "O" is interchangeable with the number "0". Special characters cannot be used consecutively, and a maximum of two can be used.

Different plate designs have different character limits. The character limit for your chosen sign design will be displayed next to the sign message box.

  • A warning: Rude, offensive or explicit license plate messages will not be accepted. The form may state that they are available, but the application will be rejected by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Step 4: Check for a message about your license plate. After writing a message, click the "Submit" button to check if the message is available.

If a plate is listed as unavailable, keep trying until you find the right one.

Part 2 of 3. Order your personal license plates

Step 1: Download and print the personalized license plate application form.. Click on the License Plate Application link, which can be found on the license plate page or on the availability check page.

Print out the form. If you wish, you can complete the form on your computer before printing it.

Step 2: Fill out the form with your personal and vehicle information.. Fill in the name of the registered owner of the vehicle, as well as their driver's license, telephone, mailing address, and email address.

Fill in the vehicle information which includes your vehicle type as well as the current license plate.

  • AttentionA: The person you enter on the form must be the registered owner of the vehicle.

Step 3: Fill in the desired personalized license plate information. Select the license plate design you have chosen and then write down your preferred license plate message.

Briefly explain the message about your license plate.

  • Functions: Be sure to give a complete answer to the explanation of the license plate message.

Step 4: Sign the form and date.

Step 5: Submit your application to the Department of Motor Vehicles by mail.. Enclose the completed form in an envelope and mail to:

Part 3 of 3. Set up your personal license plates

Step 1: Get a notice from the Department of Motor Vehicles.. This will let you know if your plate is approved.

Step 2: Pay for your personal license plate. When you receive a notice, follow the attached instructions to pay the fee.

  • AttentionA: Individual license plate fees are in addition to standard license plates, registration fees and taxes. There is also a small fee for the reflective plate.

Step 3: Get your personal license plates. Once your payment has been received, your license plates will be mailed to you.

Step 4: Install your personalized license plates on your car. Once you receive your nameplates in the mail, install them on both the front and back of your vehicle.

If you are not comfortable installing license plates yourself, you can go to any garage or mechanic shop and have them installed.

This is a good time to check your license plate lights. If your license plate is burned out, you need to hire a mechanic to help you get the job done.
