No one likes to spend extra time on car registration and license plates after moving to a new state or buying a new car. But if you find yourself in a new state or own a new car, you will need new license plates.

The Arkansas Department of Motor Vehicles will need to issue your license plates. You have the option for standard editions, but many people like to have personalized messages on their plates. If you want to choose which characters will be on your license plate, you will need to follow a short process to make sure your numbers are approved and paid on time.

Below are the steps you need to follow to successfully purchase a personalized license plate in Arkansas.

  • Attention: Custom license plates can only be ordered for vehicles registered in Arkansas.

Part 1 of 3: choose a message for your plate

Step 1. Choose a personalized message. It's a good idea to have a few ideas about what kind of message you want.

Choose several different character combinations because your first choice may not be available or approved. You will need to submit a request for a personalized message, and if it is not available, you will need to select the second or third option.

Once you've determined what you want to see on your personal license plate, check it out online.

Step 2: Visit the State of Arkansas website to check availability.. Go to the Personalized Arkansas License Plate page.

Step 3: Choose the right type of license plate for your car. Click the drop-down arrow to select Car/Pickup/Van or Motorcycle.

Check the box below the Tablet Type field, and then click Next.

  • Attention: Arkansas offers several license plate designs. If you would like to order an individual special license plate, please fill out the form located here. Personalized signature plates cannot be ordered online.

Step 4: Enter your desired license plate message: Enter the message you want to put on your personal plate in the available fields for "Personalized Plate Recording".

Only the following combinations are allowed for personalized numbers:

  • Three letters (ABC or ABC)

  • Four letters preceded or followed by one or two digits (ABCD12)

  • Five letters preceded by one digit or followed by one digit (ABCDE1)
  • Six letters (ABCDEF)
  • Seven letters except motorcycles (ABCDEFG)

  • Attention: ampersand (&), hyphen (-), period (.), and plus sign (+) are not allowed.

Step 5: Click Check Plate.. You will receive an instant message telling you if a license plate message is available.

If not, you will need to enter another message until you have selected an available one.

Step 6: Confirm your personal nameplate: If the plate is available, you will see a preview of the personalized plate. You can validate the message.

If you are satisfied with your license plate preview, click Continue.

Part 2 of 3. Make a payment and order a personalized plate

Step 1: Choose a payment method. Select either a credit card or an electronic check by clicking on the appropriate button.

If you choose an electronic check, you will need to enter the following information:

  • First and last name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • E-mail. address
  • Bank account type
  • Bank Account Number
  • Route number

Step 2: Provide payment information. Enter the required information on the Payment Information screen.

The total cost of the license plate will be shown at the top of the screen. There is a small additional fee to replace your current license plate with a personalized one. This amount will be indicated in the notification letter you will receive after requesting a plate.

Step 3: Submit your order. Once your request has been approved, it will be ordered. Plates are ordered weekly, on Fridays.

You can check the status of your order by contacting the Personalized Plates office at 501-682-4667.

Part 3 of 3. Get new plates

Step 1: Get notified when you arrive. You will receive a letter notifying you that your license plate has arrived at the personal license plate office in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Wait four to eight weeks before your plate is delivered and you receive a notification.

Step 2: Choose how you would like to receive your plates. You have the option to either pick up your plate at Little Rock or have new personalized plates mailed to your address.

Step 3: Install the plates. Your new license plates must be securely attached to your car or motorcycle.

If you are not comfortable installing license plates yourself, you can go to any garage or mechanic shop and have them installed.

This is a good time to check your license plate lights. If your license plate is burned out, you need to hire a mechanic to help you get the job done.

Be sure to stick your current license plate stickers on your new license plates so they are always up to date and you can avoid being penalized for driving with expired license plates.

A personalized license plate is an easy way to add personality and flair to your vehicle. If you're moving to Arkansas and still need to order new plates, the process can be a little more fun with the addition of a personal touch. And your new license plates will make you smile every time you get behind the wheel.
