How to Buy a Personalized Kansas License Plate

Personalized plates, also known as vanity plates, are available in every state in the US and the District of Columbia. Many people turn to this customization to reflect political opinions, identify their car as their own, or even show a sense of humor.

Regardless of the reason why you need personalized plaques, the process for getting one varies slightly from state to state. In Kansas, personalized license plates are relatively easy to obtain with a properly completed application and associated fees.

Part 1 of 1: Getting a Personal License Plate in Kansas

Step 1: Visit the Kansas Department of Revenue website.. Select the Vehicle Forms option from the Forms drop-down menu on the top navigation bar on the site.

Then select the option to view the Personalized Nameplate and Label Application (TR-211) or the Personalized Nameplate Application by Mail (TR-715), depending on whether you plan to apply in person or by mail.

Alternatively, you may personally go to your county treasury office and request the appropriate form, although there may be a significant wait in line.

Step 2: Print the selected form and fill in the required fields. It is helpful to have your vehicle registration number nearby to find information such as your current license plate, the make and model of your vehicle, and other relevant details that you will need to provide for an individual Kansas license plate application.

Step 3. Decide on a personalized license plate message.. Check on the personalized nameplate search page to see if your choice is available.

Keep in mind that cars and trucks are limited to seven letters, numbers and spaces, while motorcycle or disabled license plates are limited to just five characters. Also, the number zero is not allowed on dressing tables in Kansas.

This is a very important decision because your choice of personalization will be on your car in front of everyone. Your message may not be approved if it is deemed offensive or otherwise inappropriate.

Step 4: Prepare payment for personalized plates. Receive the correct amount for your car - charges will vary for motorcycles.

Make the money order payable to the Kansas Department of Revenue. Keep the money order receipt for your records so you can get your funds back if the money order gets lost in transit.

  • AttentionA: If you plan to apply in person, you also have the option to pay in cash or by debit/credit card.

Step 5: Request disabled tags if necessary.. If you are disabled, please make a copy of your current ID or have your doctor or other health professional complete and sign Form TR-159 and attach it to your application and money order.

Personalized disabled tags will have a disabled symbol, resembling a stick figure in a wheelchair, to the left of your chosen word or phrase.

Step 6: Submit the application package. Make sure you have a completed and signed nameplate application, money order, and any other required documentation.

Then either mail it in person to your county treasury office or by mail to the appropriate address.

It usually takes four to six weeks for your license plates to be mailed in, provided the Department of Revenue approves your application without asking for any additional information or forms.

Once your personal Kansas license plate arrives in the mail, attach it to your vehicle. Your cosmetic nameplate will be legal for five years. At this point, you must renew your personalization, although there is no charge for this renewal. However, you will still have to pay regular filing fees and personal property taxes. If you don't renew your personalization, your chosen word or phrase will become available again to those looking for cosmetic tags to claim.

Personalized license plates are a quick and fun way to personalize your vehicle. Choose your makeup bag carefully and it will make you smile every time you use your car.
