How to buy a good quality fuse

Fuses can be the heart of a car's power center, ensuring everything works properly by directing electrical power to where it needs to be. The power center is a massive improvement over the random arrangement of fuses and relays in cars that were built before the 1980s, and they are now logically grouped and identified, making them much easier to replace than in the past.

A separate fuse panel makes it easy to find a blown fuse. You can place a fuse panel either around the side panel or under the dash - and these fuses support everything from windows, outlets, power seats, interior lighting to horn and more.

Fuses protect circuits from dangerous overloads that can start a fire or damage fragile electrical components. These fuses are the first line of defense, and while they are simple and inexpensive, they are a serious safety feature to help you stay on the road. Fuses come in two basic sizes: mini fuses and maxi fuses.

What you should pay attention to when buying a quality fuse:

  • Size: mini fuses are rated up to 30 amps and maxi fuses can load up to 120 amps; with a fuse number showing the maximum rating for that particular fuse.

  • Circuit off: A blown fuse is very noticeable on visual inspection as you will see a broken wire inside the fuse, and in older built-in fuses you will see a broken filament. If you are going to replace a fuse, be sure to make sure the circuit is disconnected or you risk fire or damage your vehicle.

  • Fuse Rating: There are 15 different fuse ratings, from 2A to 80A for each fuse type.

  • Fuse color: There are colors associated with ratings and different colors mean different things depending on the type of fuse you are looking at. The 20A fuse is yellow for mini, standard and maxi fuses, but the fuse cartridge is yellow if it's 60A. This means that you have to be extra careful not only to get the color, but also the rating you want.

Replacing fuses is a simple and straightforward task once you have determined that you need a new one.
