Coil springs, also known as suspension springs, are the part of your vehicle that helps reduce excessive up and down movement while driving. These springs support the car and absorb the shocks that the shock absorbers end up absorbing when you're driving over rough terrain.

Depending on the configuration, the springs can be found between the axle and the chassis, or between the suspension arm and the chassis. Wherever the springs are located, they need to be maintained in good working order or your car will have a tough ride. When pressure is applied to the springs, they compress to maximize the friction between the road and the tires.

Here are a few considerations to keep in mind when deciding which type of suspension spring is right for your vehicle:

  • Spring type: There are two main types of suspension springs available on the market - coil springs and progressive wound springs.

  • Helical springs: Coil springs are made up of coiled wire and are used for tensile loads. These springs are easy to install and are available in various sizes.

  • Springs with progressive winding: Progressive coil springs are an upgraded version of coil springs and are used for off-road use as the coil pitch becomes narrower as it reaches the top, which aids handling, traction and control.

  • Spring material: Quality coil springs should be made of chrome silicone or chrome vanadium. Higher diameter tolerances are also beneficial. The helical springs must also be bent on the mandrel.
