How to buy a good quality fuel pump

Fuel is pumped from the gas tank to the engine, and these handy little devices come in every shape, size and application imaginable. Each of the three different key types of fuel pumps has a specific purpose: in-tank pumps, external electric pumps, and mechanical pumps—and some are easier to replace than others.

The simplest design is the one that lasts the longest: the mechanical fuel pump. There are only a few moving parts and they are most often used in conjunction with diesel engines and engines with carburetors instead of fuel injectors. Their power is provided by the crankshaft or camshaft, and as speed increases, the amount of fuel pumped increases, giving the engine more "drink" as needed.

  • Electric external fuel pumps, also known as inline fuel pumps, are most often located on the outside of the gas tank inside the vehicle's frame and can be used in a variety of ways. They may have an internal fuel pump to help them fill up quickly when the engine needs extra boost.

  • Electric internal fuel pumps float inside the gas tank, but they can be difficult to get to and replace, especially for the average driver. The internal fuel pump is surrounded by a "toe" that keeps debris that could float in your gas tank from entering the engine while pumping gas. Remaining particulate matter is trapped in the fuel filter as the gas flows through the system.

  • Mechanical fuel pumps can be made in different ways, so check the user manual or consult a specialist before buying.

  • Empty float height and float retention must be to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications to ensure gas gauge readings are accurate.

  • You want to be sure that the part is checked, matched and tested for the correct application in the car before you buy it.

The fuel pump is an important part of the proper operation of your vehicle. If you hear a hiss when you try to start the car, suspect gasoline is not being supplied to the engine and check the fuel pump.
