There is nothing more important to your own safety and the safety of your family while driving than your car's brakes. If even one component fails, you could be in a very dangerous situation. Brake systems are made up of several elements including pads, rotors or discs and calipers. The calipers make it easier to apply the brake pads to the actual brakes, slowing the tire and eventually the car. It is imperative that the brake calipers are of good quality and always kept in good condition.

Calipers wear out just like most other parts of a car. This usually happens because water or other moisture or contaminants get on the piston gasket and cause the caliper to corrode. The most common failure caused by this process is a stuck caliper. You may notice that the car pulls to one side or the other while braking, or the tire becomes hot after use. When the vehicle is jacked up, it may be difficult to turn the wheel to one side or the other, and there may be a grinding sound. Any of these signs indicate that the brakes need to be checked.

When replacing a rusted, stuck, or faulty brake caliper, keep a few things in mind to make sure you get a good quality brake caliper:

  • Buy OEM: Brakes aren't worth fiddling with, and when it comes to calipers, aftermarkets can be more prone to rust than OEMs. Your safety is a priority and with OEM you know exactly what you're getting.

  • Buy American or EuropeanA: If you're choosing aftermarket calipers to save a few bucks, stick with a reputable company that manufactures its parts in the US or Europe, which have stricter manufacturing controls, rather than China.
