Rotors, also known as brake discs, are the component in your braking system that is clamped between the calipers/pads to stop the wheels from spinning. Imagine a large metal donut being squeezed between your thumb and forefinger. Rotors are often abused and must be replaced when they show signs of wear.

How to understand that the brake discs need to be replaced? Vibration usually occurs when braking at medium and high speeds: vibration at lower speeds means that the damage is more severe, while vibration only when braking at high speed indicates less severe buckling.

There are three main types of brake discs:

  • NormalA: These are generally solid iron and are suitable for most common everyday consumer applications.

  • drilled: These rotors have holes drilled through to dissipate heat. They are best suited for towing as well as performance related applications. However, perforated rims are not ideal for off-road use due to the tendency of mud to clog holes.

  • cut through: These brake discs have grooves or channels that allow heat to dissipate and also serve to keep the brake pads clean. The grooves do not go through all the metal. Slotted rotors are usually suitable for most of the same uses as drilled ones.

When you're ready to invest in new brake discs, keep a few things in mind to make sure you're getting the best value for your money:

  • Use a trusted name: Brakes are the part of your car where you shouldn't look for big discounts on parts.

  • Buy carbon-ceramic composite (if you can afford it): The higher the carbon content, the more durable the part and the better its performance.

  • Pay special attention to the warrantyA: The brake disc warranty is generally very limited and very specific. They only allow replacement under certain conditions, usually defects. Several high performance brake companies provide a lifetime warranty, so you have to choose a balance between price and warranty.
