How to buy a good quality blind spot mirror

All cars have blind spots - areas next to and behind the car that you simply can't see. Even the side mirrors of your car are of little help here. This can make driving on multi-lane roads more than problematic, especially if you're changing lanes to overtake someone or approaching your exit. Luckily, a blind spot mirror can help.

There are a few things you need to consider when considering blind spot mirrors. For example, how easy is it to attach it to a side view mirror? Is it big enough for your needs? How durable is a mirror? Here is some useful information about blind spot mirrors:

  • Adjust your mirrors: Before installing the blind spot mirror, make sure the rearview mirrors are properly adjusted. Most drivers position the mirror so that they can see part of their own car - this is wrong. You should see very little, if any, of your own car in side view. It should be positioned so that you can see next to and behind the vehicle.

  • Size and shape: You will find several different sizes and shapes of blind spot mirrors. The most common are round, but there are also ovals, rectangles, and other shapes. Choose one that matches the shape and size of your side mirror (for example, the Buick Century has a very different side mirror shape than the F250).

  • Mounting method: Most blind spot mirrors use double sided tape that is attached to the outer edge of the side mirror glass. However, you will find that some of them use suction cups, while others are designed to be bolted to the body. As a rule, tape or other adhesive is the best option.

  • Materials: Many blind spot mirrors are made of plastic. They are lightweight and affordable. However, there are others made from aluminum for the body and glass for the mirror itself. They tend to last longer and provide better visibility (plastic can degrade over time and when exposed to UV rays).

Although not required by law, a blind-spot mirror is an extra precaution to help keep you and your passengers safe.
