How: Apply POR 15 for rust

Problem

If you are working on a car restoration project, then you will encounter rust damage. This issue should not be overlooked as the entire project depends on repairs and rust removal. It's like putting new carpet in a flooded house without cleaning up the mess and making the necessary repairs before putting the carpet in. The problem will remain and the new carpet will be damaged.

Of course, we can paint over the rust and it will look good, but it won't last long. The rust is still under the paint and spreading. Therefore, if we want a car to last for a long time, steps must be taken to stop the spread of rust.

Rust Repair Methods

During the restoration of the Mustang, I demonstrated several ways to stop rust. In this method, I'm going to demonstrate POR15, which has been around for a long time and is used by many restoration shops.

What is rust and how to stop it

Rust is a reaction caused by the contact of metal with oxygen and water. This caused the metal to rust. Once this process begins, it continues to spread until the metal is completely corroded, or until it rusts and is repaired and protected with corrosion protection. This basically seals the metal to protect it from oxygen and water.

When doing this, a two-step process must be followed so that rust does not destroy the restoration project. Rust must be stopped chemically or mechanically. POR15 is a rust cleaning and preparation system that chemically stops rust. An example of a mechanical rust stop is rust blasting. The second step involves protecting the metal from oxygen and water to prevent rust from reappearing. In the POR15 system, this is the coating material.

In Part 1, we are going to demonstrate how to chemically prepare metal using POR15 products.

Steps

  1. We removed as much rust as we could using a wire brush, sanding and sanding with a red sponge.
  2. Once we removed most of the rust, we vacuumed the floor pan with a household vacuum cleaner.
  3. We then mixed and applied POR15 Marine Clean to the surface. Mixing ratios and application direction in the video. Rinse thoroughly with water and let dry.
  4. Apply POR15 Metal Ready ready to spray. Video route. Rinse and let dry completely.

POR 15 instructions state that if the metal has been sandblasted to bare metal, the marine cleaning and metal preparation steps can be skipped and go directly to POR 15.

Application of POR 15 on the floor pallet

There are basically 3 ways to apply POR 15. You can spray with a spray gun or airless sprayer, apply with a roller or brush. We decided to use the brush method and it worked. The smudges from the brush are coming out and it looks good. However, we didn't worry too much about how it looks, since we're still going to cover most of the areas we've covered.

Steps

  1. Use personal protective equipment (gloves, respirator, etc.)
  2. Mask or protect floors or areas you don't want POR 15 to hit. (We have some on the floor and they are hard to get off.)
  3. Mix the coating with a paint stick. (Do not shake or put on a shaker)
  4. Apply 1 coat with a brush to all prepared areas.
  5. Let dry 2 to 6 hours (dry to the touch) and then apply the 2nd coat.

That's it, now let it dry. It will dry to a hard coat. This was our first time using this particular brand and I think it worked. I had a few comments from some of the other products that I would like to try, which I can do in the next video.

We have some rust holes to go back and weld in new metal. We also need to prime and apply sealant to all seams in the bottom. Then we are going to lay down a dynamate or something similar to reduce the heat and noise in the cabin.
