How to find the keyless code on a Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer

Many Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers were produced with an option known as the Ford keyless keyboard. Some models also call it SecuriCode. This is a five-button numeric keypad that is used to:

  • Get rid of key fuss
  • Prevent blocking
  • Provide easy access to your vehicle

Keyless entry uses a five-digit code to unlock the doors if entered correctly. The five-digit code can be changed from the factory default code to a user-defined code. Users can set any sequence they want, providing better security and a code they will remember.

It may happen that the code you entered will be forgotten and you will not be able to get into your car. It also often happens that after the sale of the car, the code is not transferred to the new owner. If the default code is also not at hand, this can render the keyless keypad useless and increase the chance of your car being locked out.

On Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers, the default five-digit code can be obtained manually in a few simple steps.

Method 1 of 5: Check the Documentation

When a Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer is sold with a keyless entry keypad, a default code is provided along with the owner's manuals and materials on the card. Find your code in the docs.

Step 1. Look at the user manual. Scroll through the pages to find a card with a code printed on it.

  • If you purchased a used car, check if the code is written on the inner cover by hand.

Step 2: Check your card wallet. Look into the card wallet provided by the dealer.

  • The code card can lie freely in the wallet.

Step 3: Check the glove box. The code card may be in the glove box or the code may be written on a sticker in the glove box.

Step 4: enter the code. To enter a keyless keypad code:

  • Enter a five-digit order code
  • Select the appropriate key to press
  • Press button 3-4 within five seconds of entering the code to open the doors.
  • Lock the doors by simultaneously pressing buttons 7-8 and 9-10.

Method 2 of 5: Find the 2006-2010 Smart Junction Box (SJB)

On the 2006 to 2010 model year Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineers, a default five-digit keypad code is printed on the Intelligent Junction Box (SJB) under the dashboard on the driver's side.

Necessary materials

  • flashlight
  • Screwdriver or small set of sockets
  • Small mirror on the outbuilding

Step 1: Look at the dashboard. Open the driver's door and lie on your back in the driver's footwell.

  • It's cramped for the space and you'll get dirty if the floor is dirty.

Step 2: Remove the lower dashboard cover.. Remove the lower instrument panel cover, if present.

  • If it is, you may need a screwdriver or a small set of sockets and a ratchet to remove it.

Step 3: Find the SJB module. It's a big black box mounted under the dash above the pedals. A long yellow wire connector 4-5 inches wide is stuck into it.

Step 4: Find the barcode label. The label is located directly below the connector facing the firewall.

  • Use your flashlight to find it under the dashboard.

Step 5: Find the Code on the Module. Find the five-digit default keypad code on the module. It is located below the barcode and is the only five-digit number on the label.

  • Use the retractable mirror to see the back of the module and read the label.

  • When the area is lit with a flashlight, you can easily read the code in the reflection of the mirror.

Step 6: Enter the code on the keyboard.

Method 3 of 5: Locate the RAP module

The default keyboard code for Explorer and Mountaineer models from 1999 to 2005 can be found in the Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module. There are two possible locations for the RAP module.

Necessary materials

  • flashlight
  • Small mirror on the outbuilding

Step 1: Find a place to change tires. On most Explorer and Mountaineers from 1999 to 2005, you can find the RAP module in the compartment where the tire change jack is located.

Step 2: Locate the slot cover. The cover will be located behind the driver in the cargo area.

  • It is approximately 4 inches high and 16 inches wide.

Step 3: Remove the cover. There are two lever connectors that hold the cover in place. Lift both levers to release the cover and lift it out of place.

Step 4: Locate the RAP Module. It is located directly in front of the jack compartment opening attached to the side panel of the body.

  • You won't be able to see the label clearly from this angle.

Step 5: Read Code Without Default Key. Shine your flashlight on the label as best you can, then use the mirror on the extension to read the code from the label. This is the only five digit code.

Step 6: Install the socket cover. Reinstall the two bottom mounting latches, press the panel into place, and press the two levers down to lock it in place.

Step 7: Enter the code without a key.

Method 4 of 5: Locate the RAP module on the rear passenger door.

Required material

  • flashlight

Step 1 Locate the passenger seat belt panel.. Locate the panel where the rear passenger's seat belt enters the pillar area.

Step 2: Release the panel manually. There are several tension clips that hold it in place. A firm pull from above should remove the panel.

  • A warningA: The plastic can be sharp, so you can use gloves to remove the decorative panels.

Step 3: Remove the retractor seat belt panel.. Pull the panel covering the seat belt pretensioner to the side. This panel is right below the one you removed.

  • You don't need to completely remove this part. The module is right below the other panel you removed.

Step 4: Locate the RAP Module. Shine a flashlight behind the panel. You will see a module with a label, which is a RAP module.

Step 5: Get a five-digit code. Read the five-digit code on the label, then snap all panels into place, aligning the tension clips with their location in the body.

Step 6: Enter the default keypad code on the keyboard.

Method 5 of 6: Use the MyFord Function

New Ford Explorers can use a touch screen system known as MyFord Touch. It manages comfort and convenience systems, including SecuriCode.

Step 1: Press the "Menu" button. With the ignition on and the doors closed, press the Menu button at the top of the screen.

Step 2: Click the "Car" button.. This is displayed on the left side of the screen.

  • A menu will appear that has the option "Door Keypad Code".

Step 3: Select "Door Keypad Code" from the list of options..

Step 4: Install the keyboard code. Enter the default keypad code from the user guide, and then enter your new personal XNUMX-digit keypad passcode.

  • Now it's installed.

If none of the options helped you get the default keyless keypad code, you will have to go to your Ford dealer to have a technician retrieve the code from the computer. The technician will use the diagnostic scanner to get the code from the RAP or SJB module and provide it to you.

Typically, dealers charge a fee to obtain keypad codes for customers. Ask ahead of time what the service fee is and be prepared to pay once the process is complete.
