How to clean a windshield

An essential part of car safety is having a clear view of the road in front of you. Your windshield will soon get dirty, and at some point you will have to deal with it. Your windshield gets dirty from many common things in your environment, including bugs, dust and dirt, road oil, road salt, and tree tar.

A dirty windshield is not limited to the outer surface of the glass. The inside of your windshield also gets dirty, as polluted outside air enters your glass through the heater vents, and oils, moisture, and even cigarette smoke can foul the inside of your windshield.

When your windshield is dirty, you will start to notice that it becomes harder to see through the glass for several reasons. When it's sunny outside, sunlight reflects off dirt on the windshield. When it's cold outside, moisture accumulates more easily inside your windows, causing them to fog up.

Windshield cleaning is part of normal vehicle maintenance and should be done every 1-2 weeks or whenever you wash your car. Here's how to clean your windshield:

  1. Gather the right materials - To clean the windshield, you will need the following materials: bug remover spray (recommended: 3D Bug Remover), mesh sponge (recommended: Viking Microfiber Mesh Bug and Tar Sponge), glass cleaner, paper towels or microfiber cloth and water. .

  2. Spray windshield with bug spray - Coat the windshield completely with spray. The spray softens bugs and resin stuck to the windshield, making them easier to remove later.

  3. Let the insect remover spray soak in - If bugs and tar have been on your car for days or weeks, let the spray soak in for 10 minutes to soften the grime on your glass.

  4. Wipe the windshield with a sponge. - All you need is a gentle push to loosen and remove bugs and tar from your windshield. The mesh is soft enough not to damage the glass, but abrasive enough to remove stuck pieces of glass. Get to the edges of the windshield to make sure the windshield is evenly and completely clear.

  5. Rinse the windshield with clean water - Insect removal spray may foam when rinsing, so rinse with plenty of water. Rinse until no more bubbles come out of the glass.

  6. Raise the wiper arms — To completely clear the windshield, raise the wiper arms to the vertical position. If the wiper arms don't hold up, you'll have to lift them individually while you wipe the glass.

  7. Spray glass cleaner directly onto the windshield. - Foaming glass cleaner will help remove any remaining particles on the windshield.

Functions: Spray half the windshield at a time. Trying to clean it all in one go is hard to do due to the large surface area.

  8. Wipe off glass cleaner Wipe the wiper off the windshield with clean paper towels or a microfiber cloth. Wipe first in a vertical pattern and then in a horizontal pattern for best streak-free results.

A warning: The circular pattern will leave the most visible streaks on the glass that you will notice when the sun shines on the windshield.

  9. Wipe until the glass cleaner is gone from the surface. — If the streaks are still visible, clean the glass again.

  10. Retry - Repeat for the other side of the windshield.

  11. Wipe the rubber edge of the wiper blade - Use a damp paper towel or rag when you're done. Lower the wiper blades back onto the glass.

  12. Spray glass cleaner onto fabric — It's for cleaning the inside of the windshield.

A warning: If you spray glass cleaner directly on the glass, you will clean the entire car dashboard and interior parts, and waste glass cleaner.

  13. Wipe the inside of the windshield — Wipe with a cloth dampened with glass cleaner, piece by piece. Do half of the windshield at a time.

  14. Wipe the windshield according to the pattern. Wipe first in a vertical pattern, then in a horizontal pattern. This will minimize the streaks you can see. Don't forget to wipe your rear view mirror too. Wipe completely to the edges of the windshield around the perimeter.

  15. Retry - Repeat for the rest of the windshield.

  16. Brush until the streaks are gone - Clean the windshield again if you see streaks on the glass.

Functions: If streaks keep appearing after cleaning the glass, try changing the cloth. A dirty rag will leave streaks on the windshield.

  17. Inspect the windshield wipers You can keep your windshield clean longer if you properly care for your wiper blades or replace them if they break.

  18. Look for signs of wear Look carefully to make sure they are not dry or cracked. If they show signs of wear, have your mechanic replace the wiper blades.

  19. Clean the blades - Wipe the blades with a cotton cloth dampened with alcohol or use baking soda.

  20. Add washer fluid — Check the windshield washer fluid level and top up to the fill line.

Functions: Use rainscreen on the windshield to keep the water running off without leaving streaks. The product also makes it easier for you to see even when it rains.
