Where do pond pollutants come from?

Garden ponds are a space not only for fish, but also for many types of plants, which is why it is so important to keep the aquarium clean. Uneaten food, sand and dust carried by the wind, leaves, particles of trees and plants, or insects all contribute to the formation of sediment at the bottom of the pond and make the water cloudy. The pond in this state does not look very good and is not such a beautiful decoration of the garden. So if you want to enjoy a manicured yard around your home, you need to arm yourself with a few items that will help you keep your water in top condition and give your pond a whole new look!

Is it possible to avoid the formation of silt in the pond?

It is impossible to completely avoid pollution. However, the probability is higher if there are many trees and shrubs near the reservoir. Moreover, the size of the reservoir is of great importance here. In the case of a small and shallow reservoir, there is a greater risk of overgrowth and silting. The amount of food supplied to the fish is also an important issue. If you sprinkle it too heavily, the chances of silt accumulating greatly increase. When planning the construction of a pond, it is also worth considering planting special plants at the bottom of the reservoir. They will provide oxygen and additional protection against bacteria and chemicals that affect the unsightly appearance of the aquarium.

How to get rid of silt from a pond?

How to clean the pond from silt and sediment? First of all, the container should be properly prepared. If there are fish in it, be sure to move them to a safe place. Then, using a special pump, pump out about ⅔ of the water. The next step is to remove the silt with a spatula or a special shovel.

There is another method of getting rid of silt from the pond - the use of a special vacuum cleaner. This method is much faster, but the device itself is more expensive than traditional solutions. The vacuum cleaner is extremely efficient and easy to use - it allows you to thoroughly clean the tank from the shore without entering the water. It is not necessary to first drain the water.

Another way to get rid of sludge is to use special chemicals. However, safety should be kept in mind, especially if there are fish in the aquarium.

How to get rid of algae in the pond?

As with slime, you have several options to choose from. The easiest way to remove algae from the aquarium is by hand, for example with a rake. There are also many chemicals available on the market that will help you get rid of unwanted hair. If the above methods don't work, there is another very effective method which is to use a pump and a filter.

Types of pond filters

In order to purify water from impurities, it is worth using a filter. Several types are available on the market: UV, biological and mechanical filters, differing in their mechanism of action.

UV filter

UV filters protect against the growth of microorganisms and the formation of algae. They have a special UV emitter inside, which damages the structure of microorganisms, preventing their further reproduction. Thanks to him, the water in the pond is definitely cleaner.

biological filter

Biological filters work by filtering the water in the pond. They support the biochemical changes that occur in the water.

mechanical filter

Mechanical filters are most often used in combination with biological filters. They are able to purify water from mechanical impurities and reduce the content of substances harmful to fish.

How to prepare a pond for winter?

If your garden has a pond, it needs to be winterized properly. First of all, remove the leaves and get rid of the silt in the ways described above. In addition, proper care should be taken of all devices in the aquarium, such as filters or pond pumps. Check the manufacturer's recommendations to see if these devices are suitable for low temperatures. If not, be sure to remove them from the pond before the first frost.

You also need to remember about the proper care of plants in the pond. If the tank is deeper than 1 meter, no problem, as the water will not freeze. If you have a smaller aquarium, you need to provide the plants with the appropriate conditions and move them to a warmer place. The same goes for fish. In tanks less than 1 meter there is a risk that all the water will freeze, so you need to provide the animals with the right conditions. If your pond is deeper than 1 meter, be sure to properly oxygenate the water so that the plants and fish survive the winter. To do this, special holes are made in the ice, thanks to which the fish have access to air.

The pond is a decoration of the garden, but it looks good only if it is clean. Take care of its appearance using filters, chemicals, and simple tools like a rake or shovel. Thanks to this, you will remove silt, algae and make the water crystal clear. Take care of your pond today and make it the most beautiful decoration in your garden!
