How to open the trunk without a key

You have lost your trunk key, or the lock is hopelessly jammed - this usually happens at the most inopportune moment. For example, when a wheel was pierced on a long journey, it needs to be urgently changed, but there is no access to the balloon, jack and the “spare wheel” itself. What to do?

In order to try to open the trunk in such a situation, you will have to get close to its lock from the inside. In crossovers, station wagons and hatchbacks, this is easy to do. It is enough to fold the rear seats and climb into the cargo compartment. In most cars with this type of body, the fifth (or third) door opens from the inside with a special handle. Finding it with a flashlight is not difficult.

If there is none, or the lock drive is faulty, you will have to disassemble the plastic door trim. It is not difficult to figure out how to open the mechanism - you should insert a regular screwdriver into the actuator and turn the hinge holding the door. If you need to dismantle the lock, this can be done using a wrench. Most often, manufacturers use M10-M15 bolts for fastening. The procedure is only appropriate if you are sure that you can repair the mechanism yourself and put everything back.

Opening the trunk of a sedan or coupe in a similar way is much more difficult due to the fact that in some cars with this type of body it is impossible to lower the back of the rear seat. This problem is typical for old foreign cars and domestic models. You will have to completely remove the rear sofa, bending the hinges welded to the body. In addition, it is not a fact that you will be able to get into the trunk, since the passage there is often blocked by frames to increase rigidity. So in such a situation, it is better to entrust the opening procedure to the masters in a car service.

Keep in mind, if your car is equipped with an electric lock that has failed, the trunk can be opened manually. To do this, some manufacturers hide the key inside the key fob. If it is missing, contact your dealer.
