How to cut a bolt nail or screw with bolt cutters?
For cutting things like rusty bolts and nails sticking out of the surface, it's best to use a pair of special angle head bolt cutters that are designed to hold the jaws flush with the surface. Compact bolt cutters are enough for this job.
Step 1 - Rate the materialAs with cutting other metals, it's important to evaluate the material you're going to cut with bolt cutters to make sure it hasn't hardened. Most nails, bolts and screws, however, should not be.
Step 2 - Placing the MaterialMove the wire cutters to the highest possible position on the shaft of the bolt, screw, or nail for the strongest possible cut. If the bolt is too tight for you to gain access to the shaft, you will have to cut off the head instead - try to cut as close to the base as possible so that your tool doesn't slip off.
Step 3 - Apply ForceGently press the handles together and the top of the nail or bolt should come off easily. |
