How to Transfer Ownership of a Car in Arizona

Without a title, there is no proof that you own the car you drive. Whenever a car is bought or sold, ownership must be transferred from the original owner to the new owner (buyer). In the state or Arizona, this process only requires a few steps, but it is very important that they are done correctly or the DMV will not recognize the transfer of ownership.

Steps to Transfer Ownership of a Car in Arizona

Arizona requires both the buyer and the seller to complete certain steps to transfer ownership from the original owner (seller) to the new owner (buyer). In fact, the government recommends that both the buyer and the seller go to the DMV together to make sure the process runs smoothly. However, if necessary, it can be filled out separately.

Step 1: Sign the title

The first step is to sign the title with the seller. It must also be notarized. Please note that if there is more than one owner (more than one name on a title), both owners must sign the title and have it notarized. Please note that if the car has a lien, the owner must sign a lien release (one for each lien). Each issue must also be notarized. Please note that if the buyer buys a car with a deposit and no release, the buyer is responsible for paying the deposit.

In addition, the seller must remove all license plates, since they cannot be transferred to the buyer. The seller must check if a credit for the plate or a refund is possible. Finally, the seller must complete a notice of sale within 10 days. It can be found on the back of the vehicle registration certificate.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not indicate all persons mentioned in the title character for translation.
  • Lack of notarization of the signature.
  • Lack of a signed and notarized release of lien for each car deposit.

Step 2. Fill out the forms and visit the DMV.

The buyer must then complete an application for ownership and registration. Please note that the buyer must register the vehicle in their name upon transfer of ownership and applicable taxes and fees will apply (they depend on the make and model in question and will be assessed at the time of transfer of ownership). Please note that the buyer must submit the form as well as the signed and notarized title deed within 15 days of the sale or risk a fine.

Step 3: Pay the fees

The State of Arizona charges several fees during the transfer of ownership. The transfer fee itself is only $4.00. However, there is an additional fee of $8.00 for registration and an additional fee of $1.50 for air quality testing. This does not include the vehicle license tax, which will be charged on the value of the vehicle in question and must be paid at the same time.
