How to clean an ABS sensor?

The ABS sensor allows the anti-lock braking system to steer the vehicle while braking. If the ABS warning light comes on, it could be a sensor malfunction, but it may just need cleaning. This can be done simply at home by removing the ABS sensor from the wheel.

🚗 Step 1. Raise the machine

ABS, or anti-lock braking systemhas been mandatory for all vehicles since the early 2000s. It is used to prevent blocking Wheels at a braking emergency. Thus, the driver can maintain control of his car and prevent the wheels from slipping on the road.

The ABS system has a sensor on each wheel of the vehicle. This ABS sensor allows electronic calculator find out the speed of the wheels. Drive the car until a few inches are under the wheel. Once the vehicle is jacked up, remove the wheel nuts. Set them aside and then remove the wheel itself.

🔨 Step 2: Disassemble the ABS sensor

Find the ABS sensor. Usually occurs behind rake... Your vehicle manual can help you find it. You can also wind the electrical wire from the wheel to the ABS sensor.

You will then find that it is attached to the suspension with a set of bolts. You need to remove them to remove the ABS sensor... If the bolt sticks, don't be afraid to spray some penetrating oil on it. Leave to act for a few minutes, then remove the bolt. Put this aside.

To remove the ABS sensor without damaging it, grasp it with pliers and carefully remove it by gently wiggling it up and down. Give preference to circular motions rather than pulling it out too abruptly from below. The wire connected to the ABS sensor does not need to be untied.

💧 Step 3. Clean the ABS sensor.

Start clean the ABS sensor housing by spraying some compressed air on it. In particular, this will remove any dirt or metal debris that may be there. However, do not pour water into it, as this may damage the surface.

To clean the ABS sensor itself, use microfiber cloth for removing dirt, metal particles and rust. Use soapy water to clean the dirt and strictly avoid using any chemicals that could damage the sensor.

Use if necessary brush collect dirt. Also clean the ABS sensor area while driving if there is not enough compressed air to remove the rust.

🔧 Step 4. Assemble the ABS sensor.

Re-assemble the ABS sensor into its housing as before. Remember to put the wire back in place. Next, replace the ABS sensor bolts before replacing a wheel. Also replace its bolts.

You will need to do this for other ABS sensors in your vehicle. After all of them are removed, lower the car from the jacks and turn on the ignition. If the dashboard ABS warning lamp is still on, go to the garage for diagnosis as the problem may be electrical. The sensor can be permanently damaged.
