How to clean the idle valve

IAC valve maintenance includes cleaning it periodically to ensure its long life. It keeps your car's idle level at a normal level.

The job of the idle control valve is to regulate the vehicle's idle speed based on how much air is getting into the engine. This is done through the vehicle's computer system and then sends the information to the components. If the idle air control valve is defective, it will result in rough, too low, too high, or uneven engine idling. Cleaning the idle control valve on any vehicle equipped with this valve is fairly straightforward.

Part 1 of 2: Preparing to Clean the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV)

Necessary materials

  • carbon cleaner
  • Clean cloth
  • New gasket
  • Screwdriver
  • wrench

Step 1: Find an IACV. It will be located on the intake manifold behind the throttle body.

Step 2: Remove the intake hose. You will need to remove the intake hose from the throttle body.

Part 2 of 2: Remove IACV

Step 1: Disconnect the battery cable. Remove the cable going to the negative battery terminal.

Step 2: Remove the screws. Remove the two screws that hold the IACV in place.

  • FunctionsNote: Some automakers use soft head screws for this part, so be careful not to rip them off. Use the correct size screwdriver for the best fit.

Step 3: Disconnect the electrical plug. You may need to squeeze it to loosen it.

Step 4: Remove all other plugs from the IACV.. You may need to use a screwdriver to loosen a clamp on one hose.

Step 5: Remove the gasket. Throw it away, making sure you have the correct replacement pad.

Step 6: Spray Charcoal Cleaner. Spray cleaner on IACV to remove dirt and grime.

Use a clean cloth to thoroughly dry off any remaining.

Repeat the process until no more dirt and grime comes out of the IAC.

  • A warning: Be sure to follow all safety precautions when using carbon removal spray.

Step 7: Clean the IACV ports on the intake and throttle body.. Allow the gasket surfaces to dry before installing a new gasket.

Step 8: Connect Hoses. Connect the last two hoses you removed and reinstall the IACV.

Step 9: Attach IACV. Secure it with two screws.

Connect plugs and coolant hose. Connect the negative battery terminal after everything else is in place.

Start the engine and check the operation of the IAC.

  • Functions: Do not start the engine if the idle air control valve is open.

You should notice that your engine runs smoother at steady idle. If you continue to notice rough idle, contact a trusted mechanic, such as AvtoTachki, to diagnose the problem. AvtoTachki has a dedicated team of mobile mechanics who will provide a convenient service at your home or office.
