How to clean headlight covers

Over time and with normal use, the plastic used in car headlight covers can become cloudy and foggy. When your headlights fog up, you can't see as well at night, and others can't see you as clearly or as far away. Cleaning them ensures that your fixtures are bright and can adequately illuminate the space around you. Here's how to clean headlight covers:

Cleaning the headlight covers

  1. Gather the right materials - To clean the headlight covers, you first need to assemble the right tools, including:
  • Bucket of warm soapy water
  • car wax
  • Cool water for rinsing
  • Fine sandpaper with a grit of 600 to 1500 grains.
  • Polishing composition
  • Towels (two or three)

Functions: Use a toothbrush and toothpaste if you don't have sandpaper or the coating isn't too foggy.

  1. Protect the paint - Use duct tape or other tape to cover the paint around the headlights to avoid scratching or damaging the paint.

  2. Wet the headlights Dip one clean rag in a bucket of warm water and wet the headlights.

  3. Sand headlights - Gently sand the headlights with the coarsest grit sandpaper. Move forward and backward in a sideways motion.

  4. Clean the headlights with water and a cloth

  5. Sand again - Use finer sandpaper this time to sand more headlights.

  6. scrub lights - Use a toothbrush with toothpaste to clean the headlights.

  7. Clean the headlights a second time - You may need to repeat with even finer grit if the headlight covers still look coated.

Functions: Headlights will look even worse after sanding, but with subsequent steps they will improve.

  8. Wash headlights - Rinse headlights with clean water.

  9. polish headlights - Use a clean, dry cloth to polish the headlights and remove any water.

  10. Apply a polish - If your headlight covers have minor scratches, you need to apply a polishing paste. Polish for a few minutes until you no longer notice any marks.

FunctionsA: You can use an electrical buffer to speed up this part of the process.

  11. Wax lights Use a clean cloth and polish the covers with car wax. Make sure it's a paste designed for use on vehicles. This will create a protective layer on the headlight covers.

Expect to spend five to ten minutes sanding the caps with each sandpaper, and a total of 30 minutes or more to complete the job.
