How to prepare roses for winter? This must be remembered.

Growing roses is not an easy task. Most cultivars are quite sensitive to low temperatures and should be properly protected from frost. What steps need to be taken so that roses survive this difficult period and bloom next year? Check out our tips.

Roses are unique plants. No wonder we are so eager to grow them as ornamental plants. Roses are also used to produce various kinds of specifics. For example, Damascus rose is used to obtain oils and hydrosols that have a beneficial effect on the skin. Regardless of the purpose for which you grow your roses, you need to remember their special requirements. They differ depending on the type. Some species are quite frost-resistant and do not require abundant watering. Others, on the contrary, are quite the opposite. Therefore, when planning your activities to prepare the crop for winter, you need to make sure of the needs of a particular variety. Let's look at the most popular of them.

Frost resistance of roses - which species are resistant to low temperatures and which are not?

Multi-flowered roses are the most numerous group of roses that do not require any support for growing. Differ in a large number of beautiful, densely arranged inflorescences. Varieties belonging to this group require careful protection for the winter. Their frost resistance is quite low. Multi-flowered roses include varieties such as Blue Moon, Ave Maria, Pascali and Dame de Coeur.

In turn, flowerbed roses, a subspecies of the multi-flowered group, which are notable for their low growth and not too high demands on the soil, are also very resistant to low temperatures, so they do not need to be covered for the winter. Similarly, in park and ground cover roses, strongly creeping and bushy species with high frost resistance. Spectacular white-flowered (alba) roses, related to ground cover, are particularly frost-resistant. Damask rose should be protected from frost, which, although relatively stable, may not be able to cope with dynamically changing environmental conditions.

How to protect roses for the winter?

Rose varieties that are more sensitive to cold should be protected with agrotextiles. It is a useful protective material that is used at any time of the year. It has several functions depending on the application:

  • frost protection;
  • increase in soil temperature;
  • increase in air temperature;
  • protection against the development of fungal diseases;
  • retaining moisture in the soil;
  • preventing the growth of weeds.

How to cover roses for the winter? When preparing plants for the winter season, winter agrotextiles should be used. Most often it has a weight of 50 g / m2 and a white tint. Such non-woven agrotextile increases the temperature of the substrate next to the plant, and at the same time allows air and moisture to flow freely. Thus, the plant is surrounded by a warm "sheepskin coat", and at the same time has a lot of freedom.

How to put agrotextile on roses?

The primary use of agrotextiles in the case of roses is not needed - the flower beds do just fine without this type of protection. However, it is worth protecting your multi-flowered varieties and using agrofabric on the above-ground parts of the plant. It is enough to wrap the rose after its preparation and make sure not to damage the delicate parts of the plant. The "cocoon" should be tight enough, but not too tight, as this can damage the plant. You can tie it with thread or staple it. Agrotextile pins will only be needed if you plan to use it in the ground.

When to prune roses for the winter?

Although your intuition may tell you otherwise, roses should not be pruned before winter. Only after the end of the winter season and the removal of shelters comes the time to trim the shoots. Why? The reason is simple - the places after cutting the shoots need to be healed. Otherwise, they can make the plant more susceptible to frost. In exceptional cases - for example, when the rose has grown to an impressive size and it is difficult to protect it for the winter - you can cut the plant, but you should try to do it as little as possible.

How to protect roses in a pot for the winter?

Growing roses in a pot does not exclude the use of agrotextiles on the ground. You can also put on a ready-made cap made of agrotextile with appropriate sizes on roses. Insulating the pot can be a good way to protect the root part. It is enough to take out the seedling, empty the pot, then cover it with a layer of foam and fill it again. Cold flowing from the ground can be neutralized by placing a thick layer of foam under the pot or placing it on a wooden stand. If the rose is light enough, it can also be placed in a flower bed. The root part will also be protected by pot lids. It is best to choose straw or rattan models that provide good thermal insulation.

Roses can be sensitive, but good frost protection can effectively prevent them from freezing. Using the above methods, you will surely provide them with sufficient protection.
